A RIO paralympian who narrowly missed out on a medal has celebrated a podium finish of a different kind.

Sophie Carrigill, who was part of the Great Britain women’s wheelchair basketball team in Brazil, has picked up a degree in sports psychology from the University of Worcester. Part way through her degree course Sophie was named as the captain of the GB women’s squad.

The 22-year-old former Wakefield Girls’ High School pupil said: “It was definitely a challenge to juggle studying and training but I found that doing my best to be organised and manage my time was the best way to be successful.

“I also had a lot of support from lecturers and staff members at the university and also a lot of support from the staff at British wheelchair basketball which made doing both things much easier.”

“It’s a very surreal feeling that I’ve finished university.”
