A WAKEFIELD school is working its magic to create the next generation of computer wizards.
Zenos, Europe's largest Microsoft IT Academy, has 14 schools across the UK, including one at Wakefield's Silkwood Business Park.
Funded by the Learning and Skills Council, it provides free training to people aged between 16 to 18, who want to work in the IT industry.
Graduates of the five-month full-time course have gone on to work for a number of high-profile organisations, including Fujitsu, Xerox and the NHS.
The academy's national intake manager, Tony Pitchford, said: "Around 80 per cent of our graduates end up working in the industry within a year of completing the course, compared to only 40 per cent of university graduates.
"There is a huge shortage of IT professionals and there is concern about the level of IT skills among school and college leavers, as well as their level of professionalism."
Former Crofton High School pupil Thomas Eaton, 17, is due to graduate in four weeks.
He said: "I never really fancied going to college, but I saw this and thought it was something different.
"The course is fun and enjoyable because it's not just theory, it's interactive and practical."
Thomas has already started applying for jobs as an IT administrator.
An open evening takes place at Zenos on Thursday, July 10, between 5pm and 7pm.
