End of one era – start of another

A HAIR salon that has been a perm-anent fixture at a Wakefield supermarket for more than 25 years has snipped across the road to a new home.
This week marked the end of an era for the Philips Hair Salon at the Asda Superstore in Durkar when its lease came to an end.
But it is not a case of hair today, gone tomorrow because the salon will re-open at its new premises on Standbridge Lane – just opposite – on Monday.
Owner Philip Dickinson, who has five salons and two academies across Wakefield and Leeds, said: "The salon has been a regular fixture for many Asda shoppers for a quarter of a century, but the new premises will be better than five star. It will be serene and provide opportunities for extensive beauty treatments, which I know are going to be popular with clients, and staff are really looking forward to the move too."
He said the supermarket salon became the set of an advert in 1984, when Philips became the first hairdressing company in the UK to advertise on television.
Mr Dickinson said: "It was a huge success for the business, but I think the catchphrase will haunt me to my dying day – 'if you're not becoming to him, you should be coming to us'."
He added: "I've always said the hairdressing industry is one of the most difficult to master. There aren't many hairdressing businesses like mine that have been running for 34 years.
"We're getting on for third generation clients now, which is making me feel very old but I've enjoyed every minute of it and I'm committed to the future."
As well as the new Sandal shop, Mr Dickinson, 63, has refurbished the Ossett salon, extended the Morley salon and recently opened a second hairdressing academy with the salon on Briggate in Leeds.
