APOLOGIES: My column didn't appear last week due to a technical fault. I apologise those of you that sent me news items that weren't published.

FREE EVENTS: The New Life Christian Centre is holding a number of free events and activities throughout the summer seeking to bless the community in the Thornes area. Events include a holiday club for infants and junior school children, and in conjunction with the Big Tidy Up Campaign (Formerly Keep Britain Tidy), they will be litter-picking and tidying up a particular area of Thornes.

CHARITY CONCERT: The Rotary Club of Wakefield will host a charity concert at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School tomorrow featuring Wakefield AOS Chorus, West Yorkshire Police Band and soloists Victoria Sharp and Graham Campbell Russell from Opera North. The programme includes favourite pieces from the world of films, opera, operetta and musical theatre plus music with an American theme and a traditional British Proms finale. All told there will be music for everyone! The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets, priced £10, including your first drink, are available from Townsend Jewellers in Wakefield, Rotary members, boxoffice@rotarywakefield.org.uk, or on the door. Please support this wonderful event.

DEAD AIRMAN OF ST AUSTIN'S: In an earlier column I asked for help in locating relatives of Sgt Derick McDermott who died in 1944 when his aircraft crashed into a church steeple in Selby. Thanks to those who came forward including Derrick's cousin Charlie, his sister-in-law and other members of the family. Derrick was brother of Austin and Charlie also lived in Union Square.

WAKEYBUS: The WakeyBus Project provides reliable minibus transport service to voluntary groups throughout the Wakefield area. They endeavour to maintain the highest standard of service while keeping charges low. A transport service can be offered to qualifying groups seven days a week including evenings at no additional cost. Please contact Richard, the service coordinator, to discuss your transport needs on 01924 374238.

COFFEE MORNING: There will be a coffee morning at St John's Church tomorrow 10am to noon, admission 50p. All are welcome for a cuppa and a chat.

TODDLER SERVICE: There will be a special service for babies and toddlers at St John's Church on Thursday, July 9, between 9.30-10am on the theme of 'When I feel afraid'. All under fives are welcome for a fun time of singing, prayer, story and crafts, with an adult, please.
