DURKAR WI: The recent report of the April meeting of the Durkar WI wrongly reported the names of the hostesses of the meeting – they were in fact Margaret Deacon, Margaret Furrons and Ann Hebeky. Eleven members went to the Red Kite and walked around the lakes. Eight members met at Clayton west and walked to Bretton Park. The whist drive will be held at 7.30pm on May 15 in the school room at the methodist church on High Street, Crigglestone. Tickets cost £3 and everyone is welcome. The next monthly meeting of Durkar WI will be held at 7.30pm on Monday, May 12 at the church on the High Street, Crigglestone.

METHODIST CHURCH: The preacher at Crigglestone Methodist Church last Sunday was Mr Rothery, whose forefathers came from Crigglestone. Mrs Singleton put roses in the church this week. Harold Marfleet, who was recently made a member of the church, was presented with a hymn book. At the fellowship meeting, Harold showed interesting videos of local churches. It was the chapel anniversary and Jean Newton made and decorated a celebratory cake, which was shared by members. This Sunday, the 10.45am service at the church on High Street, Crigglestone will be conducted by Mr Pope.

GOAT FARM: I've had an e-mail from an individual who complained that I hadn't written anything about the application to set up a goat farm in Newmillerdam. As I explained to this person, the Wakefield Express sometimes decides that an item in a correspondent's column merits a news story in itself and, when that happens, it is taken out of the column and reported elsewhere in the paper. This is what happened to the piece about the goat farm, which I had originally included in my column of April 18.

CHURCH IN WEST BRETTON: Reader John Bullimore from Emley was preacher for morning worship last Sunday. This Sunday at 10.30am, the Rev Ann Staton will be preacher and the service will include holy communion. There will also be a holy communion service on Tuesday at 10.30am.

WEST BRETTON PARISH COUNCIL: The annual meeting of the parish council will be held a week later than usual on Monday, May 19 at 7.30pm. Residents are cordially invited to attend. The chair and vice chair for the ensuing year will be elected.

CRIGGLESTONE WMC SERVICE AWARDS: On Thursday, June 12, at a specially arranged concert to mark the occasion, the following members will be presented with their service awards to Crigglestone Working Men's Club: Mr J Kelly and Mr P Timlin, both 10 years; Mr M J Jordan, 25 years, and Mr H Lodge will receive a long service award for 40 years service. The awards will be presented by Kevin Smyth, the CIU general secretary and Gordon Winn CMD, CIU Wakefield branch secretary. All members and friends are invited to attend at 8pm prompt.

OVER 50S CLUB: Members of the Bretton Over 50s Club will have an outing next Wednesday following the social afternoon on the first Wednesday in the month.

COMPLINE: The May service of compline will be held in the church in West Bretton on Monday at 7pm.

FUN DAY: The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Fun Day will be held this Sunday at the Bretton Lakes Nature Reserve from noon. There will be lots of free activities for children and it should be a day to remember.

CRICKET: West Bretton first team were at home to Thorne Colliery last weekend and, in a low scoring game in Division 2 of the Pontefract League, they scored 96 all out. In reply, Thorne Colliery was all out for 80 and West Bretton won their first match of the new season. The second team were away at Monk Bretton in Division 5 and they were all out for 74. Monk Bretton lost five wickets in scoring 75 to win.
