CRIGGLESTONE METHODIST CHURCH: The service at CMC on Sunday was led by Irene Hayes. She was introduced by Don Froggett who also read the notices and did a reading. Alan Shires also did a reading. The organist was Keith Bishop. Flowers were put in the church this week by Mrs Ginns. This Sunday, the 10.45am service at the church on High Street, Crigglestone, will be conducted by the Rev Andrew Stead and will include the holy sacrament.
DURKAR WI: Twenty- eight members from Durkar WI met at the home of the president Jean Newton for a coffee morning followed by fish and chips at the newly opened Durkar Fisheries. On Monday, there was a Scrabble evening with refreshments provided. The next monthly meeting will be at 7.30pm on July 13 in the church on High Street, Crigglestone. The guest speaker will be Terry Richards who will talk on the subject of 'radio nostalgia'. Other forthcoming events: on Monday, July 6, there will be a sale of clothing from Complete Clothing at Crigglestone Methodist Church. Tickets cost £2 and include coffee and cakes and on Tuesday, July 14, at 2.30pm, there will be afternoon tea at 26 Durkar Lane.
HEALTHY SCHOOLS WEEK: Next week is Healthy Schools Week at West Bretton School. So far, the school has planned for Greenhead Community Sports leaders to work with the children on multiskills, Wakefield Wildcats will also be working with the children and the British Transport police will give a safety talk. Ridings FM will be doing a broadcast from the school and every class will be using the school's garden produce to create healthy dishes. Focus on Food are also coming in and working with a class. On the Friday there will be a bouncy assault course in school all day. This is a reward to the children for collecting mobile phones for Sri Lanka. During the day there will be a sponsored activity for five minutes, and children can be sponsored for the number of times they go round the course. Part of the money raised will go towards funding some of the other activities during that week.
WEST BRETTON SCHOOL: On Monday, July 6, the school will be closed for an inset day. On Thursday, July 9, weather permitting, the sports day will be held during the afternoon. If it is wet, the sports day will be postponed until Wednesday July 15. Our Key Stage 2 end-of-term performance will be held in school on Tuesday, July 21, during the afternoon, and the Key Stage 1 and foundation stage performance the following afternoon, July 22. There will be a leavers' assembly at 9.10am on the last day of term, Friday, July 24.
WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE: In association with the Daily Express, P&O Cruises, Debenhams, and in support of Target Ovarian Cancer, the writer Barbara Taylor Bradford is encouraging members of the public to nominate women who deserve special recognition and are true examples of women of substance. CRIGGLESTONE PARISH COUNCIL: The next meeting of the parish council will be on Tuesday, July 7, starting at 7pm. From 7pm-7.15pm, there will be an open session for members of the public to raise issues and ask questions.
NEW EXHIBITION: The Yorkshire Sculpture Park's major summer exhibition by Peter Randall-Page opens this weekend until January 2010. One hundred new and recent works will be showcased in gallery spaces and in the open air. The exhibition explores Randall-Page's fascination with geometry and biology and the amazing patterns that appear in nature.
CHILDREN'S ART DAY: Yorkshire Sculpture Park is running a children's art day on the theme Geometry of Growth. Inspired by Peter Randall-Page, this offers children fun exploring patterns in nature. FUNDRAISING: The Sandal fundraising group for the Wakefield Hospice is holding a coffee morning at the Lakeside Methodist Church in Newmillerdam on Saturday, July 18, from 10am-noon. Admission is £1 and includes coffee and biscuits. In addition, there will be various stalls. All welcome.
CHURCH IN WEST BRETTON: Last Sunday, Canon Stephen Kelly baptised Tom, son of Ian and Clare Cawthorne, of Maltkiln Drive and was celebrant and preacher for holy communion. Sidesperson was Joan Hofton and Hilary Sharp was steward. Canon Kelly read the Gospel. Leonard Bartle presented the parents with a candle. Organist was Peter Bowers. Church flowers were arranged by Judith Cockell. This Sunday at 10.30am, the Rev Brian Jenner will conduct a service with holy communion. There will be a holy communion service on Tuesday at 10.30am.
PRAISE IN THE PARK: Last Sunday afternoon, the Denby Dale, Clayton West and Holmfirth Circuits held a service of songs of praise at Cannon Hall Farm. The Rev David Hall introduced the hymns and Rosemary Hall gave a testimony. The Shepley Band played the music and the soloist was Jane Hobson. Before and after the service children played games. There was a good turnout from the churches, including West Bretton.
COMPLINE: The monthly service of compline will be held in the church in West Bretton at 7pm on Monday.
PARISH COUNCIL: The July parish council meeting will be held in the village hall on Monday, July 13, at 7.30pm.
