PRESENTATION: Crofton Cougars ARLFC held their presentation evening last Saturday in the Crofton Community Centre. Main trophy winners were Lee Garside (player of the year), Shaun Markey (coach's player of the year), Chris Storey (top try scorer), Adam Morley (most improved player), Billy Cooper (supporters' player of the year and man of steel) and Len Woodcock (clubman of the year). Thanks to everyone for their support. Friendly matches are now being arranged for August.

COUNCIL SURGERIES: There will be a surgery this morning at 11am until noon at the Crofton Parish Centre when Coun Maureen Cummings will be joined by Jane Gwilliam from Wakefield District Housing, who will update residents on the housing modernisation programme. On Monday, July 6, Maureen will again be in Crofton Library at 5pm until 5.50pm. Appointments are not necessary for either surgery.

DOWN YOUR WAY: Crofton now has a new street. Stocks Lane is the name of the short road leading up to the Crofton stocks near Crofton Parish Church.

MOTHERS: There was a good attendance at the community centre last week for the meeting for Crofton Mothers' Club. Bingo was played and a raffle took place, winners were Lindsay Rowe and Pat Scholefield. The next meeting is on Thursday, July 9, and will be a debate evening starting at 8pm. Any outstanding Christmas meal deposits must be paid at this meeting which will be the last one at the community centre until September.

TUESDAY WALKERS: Next walk is on Tuesday, July 7, starting at noon from the community centre car park.

BLOOD: The National Blood Service will be at the community centre for people to donate blood on Monday, July 13, for two sessions. Times are 2pm until 4pm and then 5pm until 7.30pm. Anyone wishing to book an appointment can telephone 0845 7711711 or e-mail blood.co.uk

PLEASE COLLECT: Any pupil who left Crofton High School during 2008 and has any technology work still to collect, please do so by July 17 or the work will be destroyed.

CROFTON LIBRARY: All children are invited to take part in a summer reading challenge during the summer holidays, by reading six books. Enrolment for this event takes place from Friday, July 24.

BAND: On Sunday, July 5, Crofton Silver Band will play at the bandstand in Clarence Park starting at 2pm until 4pm.

FOSSLS: The Friends of Shay Lane Schools have organised a summer fair at the school on Friday, July 10, starting at 3.15pm.

READING GROUP: Members met this week in Crofton Library to review the book Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. The next meeting on Wednesday, August 5, will take place at the Cock and Crown in Crofton where the book On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan will be discussed. All welcome.

SOCCER GALA: Crofton Juniors FC held a successful soccer tournament last weekend on Crofton Sidings during which teams from all over Yorkshire took part.

BIKE RIDE: Sunday, July 5, starting at 10.30am from the car park at Anglers Country Park. Distance will be between 20 and 35 miles.

SHAY PRIMARY: Two groups of pupils arrived safely back home last week from a residential at Austwick, where they enjoyed glorious weather.

STRAWBERRIES: Visit Crofton Parish Church on Saturday, July 11, at 2.30pm until 4pm when strawberry teas will be served.

FAIR: On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 8, at Crofton Infants School when the Friends of the school will be staging their summer fair starting at 2pm until 4pm.

WOMEN'S SECTION: The next meeting will take place at the New Inn in Walton on Monday, July 6, at 7pm for Crofton members of the Royal British Legion Women's section.

FRIENDLY FIXTURES: A friendly match has been arranged for Saturday, July 18, when Nostell MWFC's first team will play Stockport County, kicking off at 2.30pm.

ANGLING: Members of Nostell Miners Angling Club were saddened to hear the news last weekend of the sudden death of one of their members, Peter Harding, who passed away last Friday. As a tribute to Peter their match still went ahead at Fiskerton last weekend. The match on Sunday, July 5, will be at East Stoke on the River Trent.

GREEN DAY: There was good support from Crofton last weekend when a Green Day took place at Anglers Country Park.
