FIRE: It was sad to see the fire at the fish and chip shop last Saturday and a stark reminder just how quickly fire can take a hold. Despite a speedy response from the fire service, there was little they could do to save the shop, but damp down the fire and make it safe. Thankfully no-one was hurt and I wish them well rebuilding their business.
FAMILY HISTORY: On Wednesday, July 15, the Wakefield & District Family History Society will hold a meeting at Primrose Hall, Horbury. The guest speaker will be Edgar Holroyd-Doveton who will talk on 'The English Woollen Industry 1500-1750'. If you are interested in tracing your family tree, you can go along to get help and there will be pamphlets and books available. Doors open from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Entry is free and will include a barbecue and various stalls including bric a brac, jewellery, cards, books, cakes, pick a wish, maggot racing and much more. Fun for all the family – everyone welcome.
HORBURY SHOW: The sun was shining again last weekend as Carr Lodge Park played host to the annual Horbury Show. Thousands of people flocked to the park to support the stallholders, catch the entertainment and enjoy a variety of events in the arenas. A particular favourite of mine was Colourscape, a giant inflatable world of colour, with performing artists within the main pod. Well done to the Horbury and Ossett Phoenix Rotary Club for organising the event, who in turn would like to thank everyone who attended for their support. You are welcome to post comments on their website www.horburyshow.co.uk and you can also see photographs from the event.
RECIPES: To help raise money towards the cost of building a new church, the members of Horbury Methodist Church have compiled a book of more than 80 of their favourite recipes. It is called Savouries and Sweets and it is now on sale at Rickaro Books or the Black Olive Horbury.
VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are required to repaint the entrance ways to Carr Lodge Park on Saturday, July 11, at 10am. Please register your interest with Mike Smith on 01924 265681/0797 0930927.
