PUPPETS will be helping pupils to learn about disabilities as part of a ground breaking new scheme in Wakefield.
Volunteers from Special Abilities, one of the city's leading disability groups, travelled to America last month to bring back the stuffed stars of the Count Me In programme, which they plan to tour the region's primary schools with.
The disability awareness programme aims to teach children about disabilities and chronic illnesses in an effort to bridge the gap between mainstream students and those with special needs, by showing that all children want to be included and to play and learn to the best of their abilities.
The Count Me In show features six child-sized multi-racial puppets, and each has a different disability.
Gillian Archbold, of Lupset, founder of Special Abilities has been campaigning to bring the show to Britain for years and she got her wish thanks to a grant of £4,650 from the Local Network Fund.
She said: "It really is a dream come true for me because I have wanted this for so long and we are the first to bring it over here.
"We truly believe that children are not born with discriminative tendencies – it is something they pick up as they go through life.
"We hope that by educating the children of today about accepting each other as children first, we will be working towards a future generation of people who can live in a inclusive society."
Mrs Archbold, whose daughter Sabrina suffers from cerebral palsy, added: "I want to see this in the school curriculum. The children we saw watching the show in America were enthralled and learned so much from it. I know children here will live it just as much."
The group is currently rehearsing one of a number of shows at Jubilee Hall in Lupset in preparation for a tour of the district's schools after Easter.
It also hopes to tour the region, and has plans to take the show country-wide.
Special Abilities has 10 free pilot sessions up for grabs – the sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis, by calling 01924 385977.
