OPEN GARDEN: Scones with strawberries and cream will be among the refreshments offered in aid of the Community Awareness Programme tomorrow, Saturday, at 126 Wrenthorpe Lane between 11am and 3pm by kind invitation of the owners.
UNPAID WORK: The newly refurbished Valley Cresent Community Centre has been painted throughout by people serving unpaid work penalties organised by the West Yorkshire Probation Service. They all worked very hard over four weekends and members of Wrenthorpe Community Association appreciates their dedication to finishing the job. Two of the team came back last weekend to finish what they had started, despite the fact that they had completed their number of hours the previous week.
SUMMER FAIR: Wrenthorpe Aged Welfare Association will hold its summer fair in the village hall tomorrow, Saturday, from 11am-3pm. Refreshments will be available and all the usual stalls, plus some new ones.
GARDENING CLUB: Wrenthorpe Gardening Club visit to Temple Newsam on July 1. Meet at Temple Newsam at 6pm prompt and follow the signs to the car park indicated. If you have not already booked your place and would like to join us, please contact Margaret on 01924 362978. We are following the visit with a meal at a local pub. If you wish to book a meal as well, contact Margaret for the menu. We are asking members for a small donation to Leeds City Council in recognition of the time and expertise their guides provide.
WRENTHORPE PRE-SCHOOL OPEN DAY: Wrenthorpe Pre-school is holding its annual open day tomorrow, Saturday, from 10am to noon at Wrenthorpe Primary School.
ITEMS WANTED: West Riding Nursing Home, Outwood, is appealing for items to sell at its summer fair on September 5 next. Good quality toys, bric-a-brac, books, puzzles, etc. Please take items to the home where they will be stored ready for sorting and labelling.
HORSES NOT A NUISANCE: I wish to add another point of view to that aired last week. The signs banning horses were illegal and the person who put them up was made to take them down. The path from Bradford Road to Cricketer's Approach is open to horses, but not to bikes. At one time, before the houses were built, the path went right through to Jerry Clay Lane. Most people in the village love to see the horses and many rush out to pick up their droppings for their compost heaps. Far preferable to the dog droppings left by owners too lazy to pick them up. Horse droppings are biodegradable and wash away with a drop of rain. Horses are gentle but don't like to be frightened. Some people actually encourage their dogs to bark at horses as they go by! This is dangerous in the extreme, not only to the dog but to the riders themselves.
WRENTHORPE METHODIST CHURCH: Everyone is welcome to join us at 10am on Sunday when our minister, the Rev Andrew Stead, will be leading worship.
ST ANNE'S: This Sunday the 10am family Eucharist will be led bt the Rev Brian Maguire. On Wednesday the Rev George Nairn-Briggs, the former Dean of Wakefield Cathedral, will preside at the 9.15am holy communion. Mr Nairn-Briggs has visited our church on many occasions and it will be good to welcome him back again.
