Council is philistine!

NOW the council has seen fit to ban the skateboarders from the cathedral precinct, when is it going to do something about the people who sit on the back-rest of the seats provided and place their shoes on the seating area?

I wrote to this newspaper on the same subject a while ago when the MP was complaining about Wakefield being ignored by a certain travel guide. I believe I asked whether it was any wonder when the cathedral and its area are treated in such an uncouth manner by the people who gather there.

No comment from her or the council, as was to be expected. I will say this – I have visited Ripon and York, cathedral cities both, and the behaviour that we have in Wakefield would not be tolerated in the vicinity of both those churches.

Obviously the councils in both cities realise what a jewel they have, not only as beautiful buildings, but as tourist attractions.

When I look at Wakefield Council the word 'philistine' springs to mind.

Two other subjects appeared in the Express this week on which I have passed opinions in the past, for example, we are told Bretton Hall and its estate are falling into disrepair and neglect. I said at the time it was bought that Wakefield was without a good museum to encompass the whole council area which, as anyone knows, is rich in history, both ancient and modern.

The council's solution – flog it to a hotel group!

To end on a happier note I am glad to see tha Blacker Hall Farms got the chance to make improvements to their business, which can only benefit the local economy.

I believe when they first sought planning permission they were refused on the grounds they were in gthe green belt. I wrote and said they and their farm are the green belt!

At the end of the day all these problems come from bad management and bureaucratic nonsense.

The Close, Durkar
