Disquiet over decision
IT was with a sense of disquiet that I read of the council's decision to defer rent increases at council venues. The entire episode would do credit to the scriptwriters of Dad's Army and we can all guess who'd be starring as Capt Mainwaring.
Unlike the professional organisations elsewhere who consult prior to publishing any details of any proposed changes, our coterie of bumbling amateurs have published first and thought about consultation last.
The details of what they propose to implement appears to be yet another attempt to materially disadvantage a whole host of voluntary, performance-based art groups within the district.
This latest attempt is further evidence of the highly dysfunctional nature of the not-fit-for-purpose excuse of a council department with the word 'culture' stuck in its pompous title.
Its enviable litany of gaffes already includes; Pontefract Museum, Wakefield Market Hall, the German Christmas Market and the omission of the literary arts from its strategy document.
It is the supreme irony that the councils stasi-style 'consultation' has put theatrical groups at greatest peril; perhaps Capt Mainwaring-Box and his amateur troupe could have taken acting lessons to at least give the impression that they can perform in public.
