How do they have the nerve?
It is with a familiar sense of frustration, anger and incredulity that I write in reply to Mr. Bill Houlder in the August 6 edition.
How anyone living on the east side of WMDC has the nerve to complain about the cancellation of a pool both baffles and angers me and countless other people.
The people in the eastern area have no fewer than five pools to use - Pontefract, Castleford, Featherstone, Knottingley and Minsthorpe - and until recently Normanton too.
Those of us in North, South, West and Central Wakefield have one pool, and that only a leisure facility, useless for serious swimming.
Thornes Park pool is not open to the general public.
The people of Wakefield, Outwood, Wrenthorpe,Stanley, Ossett, Horbury, Sandal, Walton and Crigglestone need and deserve a decent pool to replace Sun Lane Baths.
The people on the eastern side of WMDC should count themselves very lucky that they have a majority of wards and councillors to give them priority in local matters like leisure provision.
The answer to Mr. Houlder's question regarding the difference in the cost of the now cancelled Hemsworth Pool and the proposed new pool for Wakefield is quite simple - the Hemsworth Pool was only going to cost 1.5m. because it was a second-hand, portable pool whereas the new Wakefield Pool is a brand new, purpose built facility.
