Law-abiding gun holders
As a former firearm certificate holder and an ex-member of Wakefield Rifle and Pistol Club (1976-97), I fully support the comments made by Mr John Emmerson in respect of the shooting community in Don Mort's article in the Express on August 6th edition.
With regard to the statement made by the Gun Control Network, any lobbyist group can claim to be able to establish 'a clear correlation' if it suits their ends.
Whilst agreeing with Mary Creagh MP that guns are not toys, it may be prudent for MPs to bear in mind that people to whom the police issue FAC/ shotgun certificates are amongst the most law-abiding in society.
In the article, Mr Emmerson pointed out that the incidents which have resulted in the virtual extinction of pistol shooting as a sport in the UK were due to failures on the part of the police forces concerned.
These failures however do not entirely rest with the lower ranks of the police as some would have us believe, as was the case of Thomas Hamilton (Dunblane), who was allowed to retain his guns and renew his FAC, despite a recommendation to the contary by a police officer who was overruled by a higher authority.
As with any sport, proper training is of the essence, so in view of the forthcoming Olympic games why not give shooting a fair hearing?
