Traffic truth

One has to admire the cheek of Ken Quinn for taking Mr Tim Fulton to task regarding his letter of three weeks ago.

He remonstrates with Mr Fulton because as he lives in Upton, he can know nothing about the problems of traffic on Standbridge Lane/Barnsley Road/Newmillerdam. Where does Mr Quinn live? Ossett. Come now Mr Quinn- you are nearly as far from the problem as Mr Fulton is.

I have no idea where Mr Fulton got some of his information from, but any resident will confirm that he is much nearer the truth than Mr Quinn is. A council traffic survey revealed that at three points between 7am and 7pm, over 45,000 vehicles were recorded, which means that in an hour, more than 1300 vehicles come down Standbridge Lane.

The analysis of the survey also reveals that in the same 12-hour period, 437 of these were HGVs, which means, Mr Quinn that there is on average, one HGV in Standbridge lane every 90 seconds of every hour, and that 95 per cent of these turn right at the junction and proceed to the M&S depot in Laithes Lane, Barnsley.

There are three exits into Wakefield from the M1 for north and southbound traffic. At none of these does thw name Barnsley appear, so why do so many use the Asdale Road/Standbridge Lane/Barnsley Road(A61) route?

Which way did they go before Asdale road was built in 1983. At junction 38 if the M1, there is the A637, a better rated road than the A61. Mr Fulton got a response from M&S that they only used the A61 route when the M1 was congested.

What nonsense! Their lorries come past my house at any time of day or night and in a letter to the District Council, the M&S Depot Manager admits that they make over 730 journeys on the A61/Standbridge lane every week. The M1 must be congested all day, every day!

I am grateful to Mr Fulton who, although he doesn't live here, is clearly concerned about the traffic problems of this area. I only wish our council and its officers had the same problems!
