Come to the rescue
I ASSUMED this government was looking after pensioners. So, why has the centre on Valley Crescent to close?
As far as I know, the George Newton Centre has closed. It provided dinners, Christmas parties, had a washer and was a place where people could meet up and communicate, including pensioners.
The centre on Valley Crescent is in a place where old people live, and they can walk to it. It gets them out of their humdrum lives of four walls in a flat, where they can mix and everyone knows everyone.
I feel sure, as happily married people are as they get older, it's nice to have a change of scenery have someone to cook a meal and be with friends.
Going to the centre in Wrenthorpe is a step too far for the elderly – it's uphill and, as people get older, most cannot make it.
Just for once, I hope MP Ed Balls can come to the rescue, or how about Lottery money? It is given to most charities, this is one that does deserve it.
