Thank you to everyone who has sent me comments about the proposed vehicle charge at Pugneys Country Park.
We have received both positive and negative comments and will use this feedback in drawing up the final plans.
We pride ourselves on being a listening council, and I am taking on board all the suggestions and considering all the options open to us
.
Plans for an entrance charge for vehicles at Pugneys Country Park are just one aspect of our investment in sport and active lifestyles across the district.
It is clear that everyone thinks Pugneys is a fantastic facility.
It has become one of the key venues for British Triathlon, and we are looking at securing more high profile events for the venue in the future.
However, we have to make sure that it is fit to host such prestigious events, as well as being fit for local people and visitors to enjoy.
The financial situation of the council has been well publicised, and so we must be creative in the options we consider to continue our levels of investment.
The proposed charge would be £2 per vehicle, not per person, for all-day parking and with the money raised we could make significant improvements to the footpaths, facilities and invest in new play equipment. We are committed to improving access to sporting and leisure facilities and encouraging people to enjoy a more active lifestyle.
It is my view that we should use what we have to invest in our sports and active lifestyles and make it easier for more people to be more active, more often.
More than half the Pugneys visitors come from outside the district to enjoy one of the jewels in our crown. I firmly believe that investing in this way in the country park will make sure people from the Wakefield district and from outside the district continue to enjoy Pugneys.
