A Joly good laugh!

Dom Joly

COMEDIAN Dom Joly is the first to admit he’s done some “pretty weird stuff” since he shot to fame yelling into a giant mobile phone ten years ago.

To give some examples: the Trigger Happy TV star has travelled the world drinking, tried to fly across the Grand Canyon strapped to an eight-foot rocket, was arrested in Switzerland while dressed as a yeti – and that’s without mentioning the fact he ate from Gillian McKeith’s underpants while on ITV1’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

So when The Guide asked Dom to sum up his Welcome To Wherever I Am tour in three words, we don’t doubt him when he replies: “An odd evening”.

The 43-year-old said: “It’s not stand-up. I’ve never done stand-up, so if anyone is expecting me to stand on stage telling knock knock jokes they’ll be disappointed.

“I have done some pretty weird stuff in the ten years since Trigger Happy – I have all these weird stories to tell and I thought it lends itself to a live show. I show clips and photographs from my travels and get members of the audience to come up on stage and film them.

“It’s a very different sort of night at the theatre.”

As well as sharing his holiday snaps from unusual destinations including Chernobyl and North Korea, Dom will also tell the audience about a discovery he made in his 30s – he went to the same school as Osama Bin Laden while growing up in Beirut.

He said: “I didn’t know him, I was six when he was 16. I did my first show in Richmond on the day he was shot, which kind of put a stop to my plans of a school reunion.

“I’m really enjoying the tour so far. This is the first time I’ve been myself – whenever I’ve been on television I’ve been playing a character. I suppose I was kind of myself on I’m a Celebrity, but you’re aware you’re being filmed and are more guarded.

“To some extent I’m still a persona, because if I was like how I am on stage at home my wife would shoot me.”

The 72-date tour stops at Theatre Royal Wakefield on Friday July 15 – but it’s not Dom’s first trip to the Merrie City.

He said: “I think I filmed some Trigger Happy in Wakefield. I keep a log of the places I’m visiting on the tour and if I’ve filmed there I show the clip during my show. I hope the person in the clip isn’t in the audience.”
