Determination wins through for parents
It's a true story about a mother and father's fight to get their kids educated.
The story goes something like this – Anna and Sean Kennedy found out that they had a son with Asperger's syndrome; they then also found out that their other son had autism.
The couple were turned down by every school and special needs establishment they approached, totalling around 26 schools.
But despite Anna and Sean feeling helpless and lost as to what to do, Anna was more than determined to prove to everyone that her children were not stupid and that they had the same chance in life as everyone else, and rightly so!
With no other alternative, a very strong belief in their cause and sheer determination, they established a care and support establishment from a run-down property and soon excelled in providing a next-to-non service for autistic children.
Very soon their new school became overrun with people wanting to attend, proving beyond any doubt that out of the half a million people suffering from autism in the United Kingdom, determination and hard work could transform the lives of so many.
The story is inspirational and although it appears to be written for the parents of children with autism, it delivers a mode of understanding to the reader through empathy with their situation and gives the rest of us an insight into the lives of the sufferers and their carers.
From start to finish the book holds you, it even has the mandatory photos in it that I find invaluable to help the reader imagine the setting. Not Stupid is a fantastic read for all and I'd recommend it to anyone with or without an interest in autism or Asperger's syndrome.
