Family fairytale is set for Theatre Royal
TAKE a gutsy brother and sister, a wicked stepmother hit by the credit crunch and a gingerbread house and you have all the ingredients for Theatre Royal Wakefield's family friendly new production.
The Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel is given a modern makeover in this in-house production and there is even a chance to get involved and star in the show.
Workshops before selected performances will see youngsters practise acting, singing and dancing – some of which will be from part of the second act.
Director Jude Wright said: "The kids who come to the workshops will be able to interact with the actors as well as take part in the performance."
"Rehearsals for the show are going absolutely brilliantly."
The show starts with evil stepmother Cheryl persuading her husband, who has lost his job, to abandon his children in far away woods.
Meriel Scholfield, who plays Cheryl, said: "There are no redeeming qualities to her character.
"I'll probably get a lot of boos. but she's fun to play."
You can also get involved by helping the theatre compose the magical forest which makes up the set.
It will be made of old green and brown clothes, and the theatre needs donations from members of the public to create it.
If you have any 'forest coloured' T-shirts, trousers, jumpers or joggers, you can hand them in at box office before Wednesday, April 8.
Hansel and Gretel comes to Theatre Royal Wakefield from Wednesday, April 15, to Sunday, April 19.
Pre-show workshops take place on Thursday, April 16, and Sunday, April 19. For tickets, contact the box office on 01924 211311 or visit www. theatreroyalwakefield.co.uk
