Georgina seizes her chance for stardom

A SHY schoolgirl has gone from performing in front of her mirror to singing for hundreds of people in her quest to win a £20,000 recording contract.

Georgina Stakes has got through to the area final of the Live and Unsigned awards, where she will battle it out for the elusive single-release deal with record company Future Music.

Ossett School pupil Georgina, 15, has been singing for five years – but kept her dreams of being a professional singer quiet until she entered the competition in January.

She waltzed through the first stage of the auditions in Sheffield, but almost didn't progress to the second stage, a live show.

Here she was voted to go forward in a 'wildcard' round, which sees her heading for the area final in Manchester next month.

Georgina said: "It was really nice that people who had seen me sing voted for me to get through. Most of my friends don't even know that I sing, let alone that I've got through so far into the competition.

"I'm quite shy but I'm getting more used to performing in front of people now. I will still be nervous on the night though."

Georgina will be up against some of the north's best unsigned singer-songwriters and bands, and is considering writing her own songs to improve her chances in the competition.

She said: "So far I've just sang covers – in my audition I sang Dance With my Father and in the live stages it was Hallelujah – I think I was about the only one who didn't sing their own song.

"So far this has been such a great experience – I don't know what I would do if I won."

If Georgina gets through to the national final in Portsmouth, she will be judged by a tough panel including the former manager of the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren.
