Lights out on a ‘year of love’

No More I Love Yous

No More I Love Yous

FOR a year, sky-high letters of love have been springing up along Wakefield’s horizon – but the lights will go out 12 Months of Neon Love on St Valentine’s Day.

The final installation of the pioneering project, which appropriately features the title lyrics of Annie Lennox’s No More I Love Yous, will be switched off by artists Victoria Lucas and Richard William Wheater on Tuesday February 14.

Before the lights are go out, art-lovers can bid for a chance to buy a piece of the initiative, which borrowed phrases from 12 well-known songs, sparking a monthly rotation of glowing neon phrases over the city’s rooftops.

Other lyrics on display throughout the year included Joy Division’s “love, love will tear us apart, again” and Elvis’ “I’m in love, I’m all shook up, uh-huh-huh”

Victoria said: “I think the fact that we have experienced the full spectrum of feelings associated with love during the project’s life span is so important and for me has become the main concept driving the work.

“The transitory nature of the project and its temporal existence echoes this – a year-long artwork representing a year long-relationship. Now, we want to see each of the installations, which really have been a labour of love for us, go to a good home.”

A limited edition signed book documenting the project through photographs and essays will be available to order at the closing event. The book, which goes on sale in April and costs £24, can also be ordered from.12monthsofneonlove.blog.com

The auction will take place on February 14 from 3pm at BEAM, The Orangery, Back Lane, Wakefield. Phone bids will be taken from 9am on 01924 215550. Fans are then invited to join the artists for the final switch-off, accompanied by live music and DJ, from 8pm at Neon Workshops on George Street.

The April 2011 installation “Can you feel my love buzz?...” by Nirvana, is on show at The Hepworth Wakefield.
