Mini Olympics

FRANCE may not have done very well at the World Cup but they did brilliantly at this year's school Olympics.

More than 1,800 children from schools across the city battled it out at the annual Minilympics last Thursday.

They hopped, skipped and jumped their way around five different activity circuits to collect points for one of the 12 countries they were representing.

The day was divided into two sessions and France were crowned winners of both.

Snapethorpe Primary School pupil Abby Lee, 11, was on the winning team.

She said: "It's a great feeling to win. "I have loved everything about today, it's been fun."

The event was organised by Olympic medallist, Jill Atkins-Mackley, for the first time this year.

The 42-year-old, who helped the national hockey team to achieve bronze at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, took over from Rebecca Foster as Outwood Grange School Sports Partnership manager in April.

She said: "To get to an Olympics is the pinnacle of anyone's career and I'm lucky enough to have been three times to represent the nation at hockey.

"Replicating that here by dividing them into countries and having the closing ceremonies, is a great we way of getting them excited about London 2012 and inspiring them to get into sport.

"It's one of the events I was most excited about when I got the job and it has been fantastic fun for everyone involved."

Events included basket-ball shoot-outs, hockey slaloms, space hopper races and hurdles.

Parent Jared Evans, 38, of Lapwing View, Horbury, was there to spur on 10-year-old son Calvin.

He said: "It's so nice to see all the kids having fun together and the activities are great."

The children definitely agreed.

Gregor Spence, 10, from West Bretton J&I School was flying the flag for the USA.

He said: "I was a really fun day and I really enjoyed it. I really liked the rugby because we got to bash into people."

A parade of honour complete with home-made flags, and lots of cheers and chants, rounded off each session in true Olympic style.

And on Friday six-time paralympian swimmer Sascha Kindred was at another Olympics stlye event ini the park for children from the Five Town's area.

He spoke to pupils about the benefits of sport.
