New skate park opens

WORLD-FAMOUS professional skateboarders mixed it with the city's youngsters for the official opening of Wakefield Skate Park.

More than 1,200 boarders, BMXers and inline skaters flew around the

bowls of the 400,000 park during blistering Californian style sunshine.

International stars from the Nike and Vans teams travelled from as

France and Scotland to take part in Sunday's event, which was the culmination of six years of hard work by members of Wakefield Skate and

Wakefield Council.

Chairman of Wakefield Skate Ged Capper said: "It was amazing to see

the park being used to its full potential. It shows the true quality of the park when you see the professionals mixing in with local skaters and BMXers."But the best thing about the day was seeing so many families come down together, bringing picnics and using the park as it was intended. "On Sunday there was an event at the athletics track, the playground was packed and the railway was up and running – there was not an ounce of trouble and it was fantastic to see our public park being used to its fullest." Watene fund.

Coun Clive Hudson, who has worked with Wakefield Skate, said: "It went far beyond our expectations. We also got a lot of information out there about the Adam Watene fund, and raised moneywith a charity raffle with a skateboard and some trainers donated
