Pilgrim's Progress - 19th March 2010

Tomorrow, spring begins – or so the calendar tells us.

That's a thought to lift the spirits as we look forward to lighter evenings and hope for warmer weather. We are already enjoying birdsong and cheerful spring flowers gladden the eyes.

Yes, it has been a long dreary winter but once more the changes in the seasons encourages our optimism, energy and enthusiasm. Seasons still come and go, despite climate change, accompanied by earthquakes and tsunamis, terrifying in damage and loss of life – beyond our comprehension.

In too many parts of the world there is corruption and hostility, and in Iraq and Afghanistan, British soldiers are being killed. We grieve especially for local men who have died and admire the steadfastness with which the people of Wootton Bassett show their respect for the dead and the mourning processions moving through their town.

We all may suffer overwhelming losses which devastate us and change our lives completely. There is no way to avoid life's pain, but as with the seasons, light can follow darkness. Many people rise above grief and loss to do amazing things for others as a result of what they have gone through. Some forgive those who have robbed them of health and happiness, developing a strength they never thought they had, and a faith in God they never knew.

We never know what we are capable of until we meet such situations, because no-one is ordinary. We all have amazing potential, and God, who knows suffering, made us this way.
