Pilgrims Progress - 21st May 2010

This weekend, the Christian Church celebrates the great feast of Pentecost- Whitsuntide. It is the culmination of a promise, that Jesus would send this Holy Spirit to remain with us, even if He had bodily returned to God the Father.

St Paul reminds us all in Churches Together in Wakefield that there are all sorts of service to be done, but always to the same Lord; working in all sorts of different ways in different people, it is the same God who is working in all of them. That is our message. Pentecost is also the birthday of the Church, because it was at Pentecost that those wary followers of Christ, hiding in Jerusalem about 2,000 years ago, received this Holy Spirit of God to stand by them, always, as advocate and comforter. Then they, the new church, went out into the whole known world and spoke to everyone about Jesus' time on earth and what it meant. Pentecost, the end of our Easter celebration, has many symbols: wind - from the wind that announced the coming of the Spirit, flames - from those which settled over the heads of those followers gathered in Jerusalem, and the dove - which we hear about in the story of Jesus' own baptism, coming down upon him as the Spirit of God. This Spirit is for everyone at their own baptism, and when they are "confirmed" in the Spirit later.

So, Churches Together and its associate, Wakefield for Jesus, is celebrating Pentecost, tomorrow in the centre of Wakefield, starting at 2pm in the Cathedral, and moving out into Kirkgate and the Bull Ring, taking our story out to our city, as Christians are told to do. Do join us!
