Pilgrims Progress - 23rd April 2010

Recently I received a beautiful basket of flowers, a birthday surprise from my husband. The sentiments on the accompanying card made me weep buckets- tears of joy at such loving thoughtfulness.

In the Bible, the book of Ecclesiastes tells us there is a time for every activity under heaven- a time to weep and a time to laugh. But for many of us, too, there is also a time for life to throw a spanner in the works, usually when we least expect it. A stumbling block that causes our journey to become more of an obstacle course- but 'an optimist can convert a stumbling block into a stepping stone'

Of course we might be optimistic but could our sense of balance be a problem? We must get that right for stepping stones can be slippery! The writer of Ecclesiastes was correct. How we use our time really rules our very existence. We must have order, but we can be too busy, overworked- which sets off the the gritted teeth.

We are social creatures: going it alone is not to be recommended. Being stoical has its place, but we need each other. Someone to laugh with, to cry with, to care about their welfare and they ours.

At the coming General Election who will get our vote? Who can we trust to be fair and honest, not self-seeking but working to serve our needs and aspirations with integrity and understanding? Challenging questions indeed- but as voters we need convincing, not disappointing.

There is someone who never disappoints. Never lets us down and always seeks the common good. His name is Jesus. He has my vote every time!
