Pilgrims Progress - updated 3rd September 2010

AT last some heart-warming news: Chilean miners trapped deep below ground for weeks had at last been in contact with those trying to rescue them. Because of the depth and the dangers, it could take four months to rescue them.

At least they can now be supplied with nourishment and medication. They have survived in reasonable health and good spirits in a very limited space, led by their foreman. Minute rations of meagre amount of food they had with them have been meticulously divided and shared out at long intervals. Despite the apparent hopelessness of their case, they have not given way to panic or self-pity, but have plainly organised themselves with discipline, courage, unselfishness and mutual care - remaining cheerful throughout.

Disasters, as those of us old enough to remember the second world war know, can bring out the best and noblest in human nature, and can draw people back to God. It would be surprising if, whatever their faith, those men had not at some stage of their imprisonment put themselves in the hands of God, the only one to whom they could turn. No doubt their families and people all over the world will continue to pray for them and their rescuers, and they will discover strength, peace and confidence, however long the final outcome.

Jesus Christ showed the way of steadfast love and service to his fellow men and women, however they treated him, and utter trust in his father, God, even when he felt otherwise totally abandoned. His faith was justified. Our prayers, here and now, will help all those involved in this crisis throughout the long weary days until rescue comes. May God bless them all.
