Princess Anne visits Wakefield
A Royal guest made a special appearance at an award-winning green project in Wakefield.
Princess Anne visited the Able project on Friday, designed to provide an alternative learning and training facility for under-priviledged young people, at the water treatment plant on Calder Vale Road.
The Princess Royal was escorted around the plant by Graham Wiles, project manager at Able, and visited their on-site fish farm, vegetable garden and new BMX racing track.
Mr Wiles said: "Our project gives an alternative learning environment for young people who haven't been suited to normal education. They can learn practical skills which will benefit them in the future.
"It was a great honour for us to have Princess Anne here today. She came to visit us five years ago and wanted to come back to see how were are doing.
"She said she was very impressed with our work and seemed to enjoy the day.
"The future looks very bright for Able."
Groups and individuals can visit the ABLE site daily to work on the various elements of the project which include a large scale fish farming operation, rearing sturgeon, ornamental and edible carp, catfish and tilapia, a community orchard, a huge vegetable patch.
ABLE Partnership Ltd is a social enterprise which operates an alternative education provision, working in partnership with the Green Business Network, Yorkshire Water, Wakefield District Primary Care Trust, West Yorkshire Probation Service and the Wakefield District Community School.
