Students' dance festival
AN ECLECTIC patchwork of performances from traditional theatre to diverse dance will take to the stage as part of Wakefield College's summer festival.
The festival started in 2007 and this year's shows will build on last year's success with everything from dark folklore-inspired dance with Lure to an open-air music festival, Upload.
Marie Dalton, programme manager for performing arts and music, said: "The festival is designed to give the students more of a professional opportunity to showcase their work. It has all been done in a very short timeframe – rehearsals only started after Easter."
The festival makes the most of talented performers from the HND, ND and BTEC courses in dance, musical theatre, music and acting.
Well-known productions like Godspell will run alongside lesser-known plays like Pullman Car Hiawatha and international dance spectacular Going Global.
Going Global features bhangra, geisha salsa and African tribal dance – and the students even got a lesson in a traditional Samoan Haka from Wakefield Wildcats' newest recruit, Frank Winterstein.
Emma Clayton, dance lecturer, whose students are performing Lure, based on the original story of Hansel and Gretel, said: "What is so brilliant about the show is that the students have all choreographed routines themselves.
"They have worked in pairs to create their own sections and the whole process has only taken a few short weeks."
The Festival of Music, Dance and Theatre runs from Thursday, June 4, to Thursday, June 18, at Theatre Royal Wakefield and Wakefield Arts Centre.
A festival pass is available or 20 for adults and 15 concessions and individual tickets are also available through the theatre's box office on 01924 211311 or visit www.theatreroyalwakefield.co.uk
