Terrifying talents on show

SIMON Cowell could take tips from Outwood Grange pupils when it comes to putting on a thrilling display of talent.

Pupils at the Potoven's Lane college staged their own version of Britain's Got Talent this week, with acts having to prove their worth in auditions to make the final show.

And if the rehearsals were anything to go by, audiences at last night's Outwood's Got Talent were in for a real treat.

Among the performers set to take the stage were singer-songwriters, comedians and dance groups that could give BGT finalists a run for their money.

Drama teacher Suzanne Denton-Barber, one of four mentors for the show, said: "We have so much talent here sometimes we don't realise it. Last year we found we had unicyclists, jugglers, stand-up comedians and karate experts and this year we've opened it up across the school.

"It has been an amazing experience for the students. They run the show and make all the decisions. The students know if they don't make the grade they don't get through, and they accept it because it's like that in the real world."

Connagh Smith, 15, who was due to perform his self-penned song Stories at last night's show, amazed the crowds in rehearsals.

It was the first time the pupil, who was taught guitar by his grandfather, had performed in front of a big audience.

Speaking at rehearsals on Monday, Connagh, said: "The song is about how that people can lie so much that eventually people will stop believing them. It's not written from personal experience but something I can imagine.

"It's one of the tracks I have been working on for a demo tape that I want to make. I'm nervous about performing in front of so many people but hopefully I will be able to get over that for the show."

Also performing were dance troupe Chiller Chicks, made up of four year 8 pupils, who put together a horror inspired routine featuring Thriller by Michael Jackson, The Exorcist theme and Monster Mash.

The show will raise money for Wakefield Hospice.
