The sweet smell of success for David's Mr Stink
The author of Mr Stink is better known to us as the co- creator and writer of Little Britain, and it's not his first book either. He wrote one before this called The Boy in a Dress which was a great read, even if it was for kids!
To be honest I bought it for the title – Mr Stink is the nickname of my oldest friend. The story is based around a tramp, the Mr Stink of the title, and a little girl called Chloe. Chloe has often seen Mr Stink but has never spoken to him until she becomes friends with him.
She has to put up with the usual family traits, such as a ghastly little sister, a terrible mother who wants to be the local MP and a spineless father, all the things that make for a good children's book.
As well as the fun and comedy of the book it also teaches the kids to look deeper than the surface and not to take things on face value. It also shows up rudeness and embraces morals in a child- friendly way without taking away the humour of the story.
Mr Stink has a secret that slowly unwinds as you read more and we even get to see him make an appearance on Question Time and he even gets to see the prime minister. He has the mandatory smelly dog and can be found on a park bench, but he's got a real story to tell and he's deeper than first thought.
Written in a style not dissimilar to Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, who's now famous in his own right as an artist, the book is ideal for all ages. The story has loads of modern day references which the child may not understand fully which may also make the book's life a little short-lived, unlike Dahl's books which are
timeless.
