Wakefield Christmas lights switch on

SNOW fell in the centre of Wakefield as part of the celebrations for the turning on of the Christmas lights.

But it was not real snowflakes - they came from a snow machine that helped create a little festive magic for the hundreds of people who turned out for the annual event.

Coun Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for community safety and cohesion, and a few specially chosen youngsters flicked the switch.

Characters from this year's pantomime Dick Whittington, also took to the stage as well as school choirs, Wakefield Wildcats players and the Wildcat Dolls.

The event also saw the start of the city's first German Christmas Market which runs until December 21.
