Wakefield State Schools Athletics Championships
ATHLETES from schools across the district proved they were sporting stars this week when they took part in a challenging competition.
Around 100 pupils competed in the Wakefield State Schools Athletics Championships at Thornes Park on Monday.
Organised by Anni McKinney, head of PE at the Kings School in Pontefract, the event had something to suit every discipline from 100m and 1500m track events to long jump, javelin and triple jump on the field.
The competition, for youngsters in years seven to 10, was founded eight years ago by Dave Wright, a former PE teacher at the Mill Hill Lane school.
Mrs McKinney said: "He realised there was no competition in the area at the time, which gave pupils the chance to go head to head as athletes.
"It has gone from strength to strength ever since."
Many of the young people who took part were members of district clubs who had already been chosen to represent the city at county or even national level.
Winners on the day were presented with certificates and many of their achievements made it into the competition's record books.
