Young stars shine at West Side rehearsals
A JAM packed two weeks of rehearsals for Wakefield Youth Music Theatre kicked off in all-singing, all-dancing style on Monday.
Momentum for West Side Story has been building for weeks as the cast was carefully plucked from open auditions.
But the hard work began this week as they were put through their paces by director and choreographer Louise Denison and musical director Dean McDermott.
West Side Story is the Romeo and Juliet-inspired story of Tony and Maria, who fall in love despite their different backgrounds.
It's packed with vibrant musical numbers including America, Maria and I Feel Pretty.
The entire musical is put together in just two weeks during intense rehearsals at the performing arts studios at Thornes Park College Campus.
Assistant Director, Rhiannon Ellis said: "The rehearsals are going great. As usual we have been wowed by the level of talent.
"We have managed to work through a number of key scenes including America and we are due to have a full run through of the whole show on Saturday."
Alexandra Ward, 21, who plays leading lady Maria, said: "I can't believe how much the cast has covered in only three days, it looks like we've been rehearsing for weeks. It's a very intense rehearsal process but everyone is so dedicated and giving it their all. It's just scary how much talent there is in this production."
Jake Mitchell, 17, of Normanton, who plays Action, said: "By the third day we'd already nearly finished the first act so that in itself is an amazing achievement.
"We're all pulling together to get everything finished and it's looking fantastic."
West Side Story comes to Theatre Royal Wake?eld from Thursday, September 2, to Saturday, September 11.
