£20m M62 scheme gets underway

Motorists face delays as work on a £20m M62 scheme near Pontefract gets underway on Monday.

The scheme – expected to take until the end of the year to complete – aims to relieve congestion.

It is part of the government’s £317m national ‘pinch point’ programme and will include new CCTV cameras and automatic traffic monitoring between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Pontefract.

Data will then be sent to the Highways Agency’s regional control centre in Wakefield which will be able to apply temporary speed limits on new electronic signs which will also be installed.

Work on the project will be carried out on weekdays.

There will be a 50mph speed limit in place and there could also be overnight lane and carriageway closures.

Thomas Howard, Highways Agency assistant project manager, said: “The new technology will relieve congestion and improve safety on this busy section of motorway whilst providing drivers with more information.

“During the work we advise drivers to check local traffic conditions and leave extra time for their journeys if necessary.”
