A NEW campaign to get new mums interested in breastfeeding can be seen on buses across the district.
Wakefield District Primary Care Trust (PCT) has joined forces with Arriva buses to launch the Breastfeeding...it's your choice campaign, which aims to inform new mums about the choices and support available when feeding their babies.

The posters encourage mums to give breastfeeding a go and will run until breastfeeding awareness week, which starts on Sunday, May 11.

Claire Varey, community staff nurse at the PCT, said: "Going to a breastfeeding group antenatally can help mothers to find out more about breastfeeding and the realities.

"Some mums-to-be and new mums have had very little chance to see other mums breastfeeding and therefore attending groups can give them a vital opportunity to see how it is done and ask questions and build up a support network before they decide how to feed.

"If a mother chooses to breastfeed there is lots of support in the district. If they have a query or concern or just want to sit and chat with other breastfeeding mums there are 14 breastfeeding groups across the district.

"There is also a network of peer supporters who are all mums who have had experience of breastfeeding. They offer mum-to-mum support and have all attended a 10-week training course in breastfeeding."

As well as the bus advertising, information leaflets and posters will be distributed to GP surgeries, pharmacies, and health centres throughout the district.

Contact the Patients Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0845 6024832 to find your nearest breastfeeding group.
