THE long-awaited £3m Wakefield market hall will officially open for business on June 9, with a host of new shops on offer.
The existing market will close on June 7 in preparation for the new site to begin trading and a grand opening will be held later in June.
Market bosses exclusively told the Express that all 50 units within the indoor section had been let, with 29
of them being taken up by existing traders.
The 21 newcomers include a Yorkshire tapas bar, a Polish deli and a unique picture store, which specialises in transferring images onto a range of canvases.
Billy Rowett, markets manager, said: “Stalls have been taken by existing traders and we’ve got some other exciting people on board that we haven’t seen before.
“The outdoor market will have a special provision for outdoor catering where people will come in and cook fresh food and on a Thursday at the global market one offer will be curry.”
The plan is to run the indoor market for six days a week and the outdoor market for five.
The market will be split into four, including 50 units in the indoor section, nine units looking out on to Union Street, 11 in the food hall and 47 units in the outdoor market.
Mr Rowett added: “The whole point is to get as much locally sourced products as we can.
“It’s not an easy thing to achieve, but it’s the way we are going and it’s really exciting. Many of these traders are exclusive to us.”
New traders include a florist, speciality leatherwear, a jewellers, hair and piercings, specialist cosmetics, a cafe and pet store.
Traders were shown around the current site on Wednesday and market bosses described their response as “very positive”.
Mr Rowett said: “We want to increase customer confidence during the long-term and offer a quality shopping experience.
“Hopefully then people will go off and tell others.”
Tuesday will see a re-use market where quality used items can be sold and Thursday will be global market day where food from across the globe will be on offer.
