A BRAVE schoolgirl who needs a new kidney is singing to help others suffering with the same incurable condition.
Gabrielle Oldroyd, 10, suffers from Lupus, a rare condition in which the body attacks its own cells and tissue, causing pain and organ damage.

She needs dialysis most days because her kidneys stopped working properly in January.

A new kidney would not cure her condition, but it would greatly improve her life.

Her mum Julia, 36, and her dad Robert, 42, have been tested to see if they could be donors and early results show Mrs Oldroyd is a possible match.

But doctors say Gabrielle will need two or three more new kidneys in her life because of her condition, a situation her mum said brought home the importance of organ donation.

She said: "At the moment we are just living for today and trying to make her life better.

"We are waiting for a phone call and if a kidney becomes available she will have that. When that happens the dialysis should stop, provided the kidney is healthy."

Despite being in pain, keen singer Gabrielle is taking to the stage to raise money for the charity Lupus UK and to encourage more people to become organ donors.

Mrs Oldroyd, said: "Each day is different. She is fantastic but there are times when she feels really fed up because of the restrictions of being on dialysis. She can't eat a lot of the foods other kids enjoy, and she has just had an Easter without chocolate."

The musical event has been organised by Ossett's Elizabethans' Amateur Operatic Society, of which the family are all members.

Mrs Oldroyd, of Swithenbank Avenue, Gawthorpe, said: "It is to raise money but also to raise awareness. My husband is a prime example – a few years ago he would never have had a donor card, but this has totally changed his view."

The event takes place on Sunday, April 6 from noon at Ossett War Memorial Community Centre, on Prospect Road.

Tickets are £9 and can be ordered by calling Mrs Oldroyd on 01924 274423 or Peter Savage on 01924 263618.

Anyone unable to attend can make a donation.
