BOGUS callers pretending to be water board workers have been thieving from homes in Crofton and Knottingley.
After the spate of thefts from homes last week Wakefield police are urging people to be on their guard.

A spokesman said a conman had got into homes by claiming he worked for the water company. He distracted the homeowner or tenant by asking them to turn on the taps while he checked the pipes and then stole cash and goods.

Det Insp Anna Tomlinson, of Wakefield CID, said: "Residents should not let strangers into their house, especially if their visit has not been prearranged.

"If you are in any doubt you should get assistance from a neighbour or relative, or ask to see their identification badge and contact the company they claim to work for.

"If you are in any further doubt, contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606."
