A YOUNG man died after losing control of his soft top sports car and smashing into a wall, an inquest was told.
David Alan McCollum, 26, of Green Top, New Crofton, crashed into the wall on Doncaster Road, Wakefield at about 8.30am on November 21.
He suffered fatal head injuries in the accident.
The hearing was told witnesses had reported seeing the rear of his green Rover MG swerve out into the road.
He then lost control, hit a kerb before his car hit a wall and a gate about 200 yards from the junction with Cock Lane.
Police crash investigator Russell Windross said both front tyres on the car were worn to the point that they were illegal.
But he said this would not have contributed to the crash.
He said Mr McCollum had lost control and had oversteered to bring the car back under his control, which had subsequently led him to crash.
No other vehicles were involved and Mr McCollum was not travelling at excessive speeds, the inquest heard.
Speaking at the time of the tragedy his mum Joan, 58, said: “David was a gorgeous, loving son. He will leave big gap in all of our lives.”
At the time the family had just learnt that Mr McCollum had won a major national retail award for the Initiative of the Year at a ceremony at the Park Lane Hotel, London.
It was awarded for his work as a systems analyst loss prevention officer for Asda in Leeds.
Originally from Dublin, the family moved to England when Mr McCollum was seven.
His sister Carol, 28 said: “We all miss him. Out of all of us he was the one that got the most out of life. He was good fun – to know him was to like him.
“People liked David and he always had something good to say about people.
“He always took life for what it was. He was a real character. David was loving life.”
He also leaves behind his dad, Alan, 57, and sister, Claire, 22.
Deputy Coroner Robert Chapman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
