MARY Creagh MP praised Wakefield Council for its response to the floods – but said lessons have got to be learned.
Speaking to the Express from the House of Commons on Wednesday she said information was the key to preventing devastation on the same scale seen last year.

Ms Creagh said: "If another flood happened now there would be a lot better information and more warning – that was one of the lessons that has been learnt by Wakefield Council and the Environment Agency."

"I think Wakefield Council did an absolutely brilliant job in warning people and getting on with the cleaning up campaign but there is still an issue about information in the recovery phase.

"I think councils and government agencies have to work particularly hard to make sure people know what is going on."

According to statistics from Wakefield Council, 47 people still have not returned to their homes.

Ms Creagh said: "I want to write to those people to ask if there is anything I can do to help."

She is pushing for more information on who people should contact about matters like drains, becks and sandbags. Ms Creagh added: "We need complete transparency. People des-erve to know who they should be talking to."
