RUBBISH, overgrown bushes and damaged sandbags are blocking water flowing through Westgate beck, according to a local resident.
For years George Brain, of Monkton Parade, has been campaigning for regular maintenance work on the beck.

Mr Brain, 65, claims the beck cannot serve its purpose because it has not been cleared for decades.

And he said he got so fed up with burst sandbags lying around the streets near the beck he decided to clear some up himself.

Mr Brain and his neighbours' fears were heightened in January, when heavy rain caused the level of the beck to rise by more than a foot in just one hour.

He said: "The rubbish needs to be cleared from the banks of the beck on a regular basis.

"It is blocking the beck and the gates that regulate the flow of water.

"Those gates are our life saver and if they get blocked it adds problems for us in regards of being flooded."

Jerry Spencer, the council's service director for the environment, said: "Council officers have been alerted to the problem and will be investigating and ensuring the appropriate action is taken as soon as possible."
