TANTRUM-THROWING Tories stormed out of a meeting this week in protest over 'undemocratic' procedure.
"I'm not staying to listen to this", said infuriated opposition leader Coun Bryan Denson as he left the County Hall chamber on Wednesday, followed by most of his party.

Just seven Tory councillors stayed in the meeting and labour councillors branded the dramatic exit 'a disgrace.'

It followed failed attempts by Coun Denson to prevent questions being asked among Labour councillors about Coun Philip Thomas, who hit the headlines earlier this year for his controversial views on knives and drugs, as well as questions on the Conservative's national policies.

Council leader Peter Box accused the Tories of 'prima donna' behaviour.

He said: "We were elected by the people and if they are not prepared to sit through good and bad, it begs the question are they fit to be elected?"

Coun Denson said yesterday the Coun Thomas matter had gone to the standards board for England and was not supposed to be publicly discussed.

He said: "We took this unprecedented and spontaneous step in protest at the direction the meeting had taken. We were not allowed to comment or reply to the questions or answers being put.

"Many questions were out of date, but we were not even allowed to correct the information. This surely cannot be democratic and the time could have been better spent discussing issues of importance to the district."

Coun Denson said the mayor had received an apology from his party.

l ANGRY council leader Peter Box accused the Tories of being slack this week for their failure to deliver an alternative budget.

Coun Box said the opposition had no right to criticise his party if they could not come up with other options.

He said: "In my 10 years as leader never have any of them prepared an alternative budget and they are the only Tory group in the country which doesn't."

Opposition leader Bryan Denson promised an alternative budget for 2008 in 2007 but it did not materialise.

A motion proposed by Coun Box, calling on the Conservative group to ensure it submits an alternative budget next year, was passed in the absence of many Tory councillors who walked out of the meeting moments earlier.

Yesterday, Coun Denson said the whole thing was 'nonsense' and said his party was seeking legal advice on the proceedings.

typical Wakefield Express, biased as ever towards Labour. Why can't the Express report on the substantive point, which is Box's determination to talk about anything other than his council's policies? The controlling group can't force an opposition to present an alternative budget! How many Labour oppositions, and there are a lot of them up and down the country, present alternative budgets?

Answer: not many!

If the Tory party are criticising Labours policies and budgets surely they have a right to say what they would do. As for the Express biased towards Peter Box the stick he taken off the express group over the years he would certainly challenge that statement.A few weeks since the tories criticised the handling over the stadium. I wrote in to ask what they would do. Whether they would pay the fifty million and cut jobs and services or would back the current policy of spreading sports facilities across the district. Not one tory replied. The voting public and not just the Labour party have a right to know what the Tories policies and budget proposals are. If they can not take the heat get out of the kitchen. If the above gentlemen goes on the Wakefield website he can see every council policy and procedure and budget. Where can we find the Tory ones.

Joe is, not for the first time, totally wrong. You cannot, as a member of the public, see quite a substantial amount of confidential Council financial information. These are called 'pink papers' and are not published on the website.

so a little factual accuracy next time please, Joe.

Maybe the Conservative group (who I certainly do not speak for!) can't get all the information they need to prepare a budget? In any regard, how COULD you form a budget when even the controlling group have no clue as to the added exposure onto the budget of the loss of interest income from our investments (Labour ineptitude) and capital overspends such as the one with that ECO school (developer incompetance and council failure to moniter).

As I said before there are many, many, many local authorities where the opposition Labour group do not produce a budget. It is just impossible when you have no firm clue as to the actual financial position, and forecasted position, for the next 2 or 3 years.

You can see the bias against the Tories in the opening two words. Apart from cruddy journalism, the Express is best known for being Box's mouthpiece. After all, who controls the advertising budget that the Express is so dependent upon? It is all very well someone from labour voting Castleford to gob off about facilities. The Tory voting west of Wakefield haven't even had a swimming pool for two years and we are the ones who pay the big taxes.
