A BRIDGE-BUILDING competition engineered interest in creative careers among pupils from schools across the district.
Pupils from 16 schools took part in a technology tournament organised by the Rotary Club of Wakefield and some of its partner clubs.

Teams designed and built model bridges capable of carrying 1kg in weight.

The event, aimed to encourage more young people to become passionate about engineering, was sponsored by the construction company Costain and supported by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Charlotte Morris and Gayathri Vakkalanka, from Wakefield Girls' High School, and Jake Saunders and William Swarbrick, from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, won the key stage 3 challenge, beating Crofton High School by just one point.

Fellow Queen Elizabeth Grammar School pupils Josh Brookes and Richard Knowles won the key stage 4 round, which involved building a bridge with a moving part, with Lauren Whiteley and Joanna Leigh from Wakefield Girls' High School.

Outwood Grange Technology College came second.

They received £500 prize money, which the two winning schools will share.
