KIDS are going crazy about karate at Lawefield Primary School where a new club has proved to be a huge hit.
The Lawefield School of Karate was launched eight weeks ago by parent Jayne Chambers after she noticed there was not much for local people to do.

It now has almost 40 members aged between five and 37, and some of them have already celebrated success at a regional competition.

The mum-of-four has been competing in the sport across the country since the 1970s.

She said: "The response has been fantastic and there is a real sense of community spirit, which is nice.

"Karate is great for fitness and discipline, but it is also lots of fun, especially when everyone is learning together."

The 41-year-old runs the club on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 9pm.

Members pay £2 per session, to cover the cost of equipment.

Last week, several pupils from the school won trophies and medals at the West Yorkshire Schools' Cup.

Headteacher Craig Batley said: "Jayne has done a tremendous job and I've been very impressed with the progress that her students have made in such a short time.

"She gives a huge amount to the school and to the local community and does it all out of goodwill. In a time when we hear so much about people looking after themselves, it is inspirational to come across people like Jayne who put other people first and who is happy to share her time and expertise with people in the local area.

"The students clearly enjoy the sessions and the karate is great for their fitness, confidence and self-discipline. I am delighted that we have had such a good response from people in the area and that everyone is benefiting."
