FAULTY flooring is just one problem facing market traders less than six weeks after the opening of the new £3million market hall.
Work is set to begin early this month on fixing faulty paving in the open market, paid for by builders Shepherd Construction.

Repairs are expected to take 10 weeks, and during this time up to 26 stalls for existing traders will be set up on the wide pavement alongside the market hall on Union Street. Some stalls will remain on the open market away from where the phased work will be carried out.

Do you like the new market hall? Is it an improvement or a disappontment? Have your say in the comments section below this story.

And some traders believe that markets being held in the precinct are keeping customers away from the new hall.

Trader Mark Venables, whose Venables Vegetables stall is on the outside market, said: "Something needs to be done about the floor, it's been totally bodged up. If there's space to re-locate us to Union Street while repairs are being carried out, they should hold farmers' markets there too – give all the traders a fair crack at the whip."

The council apologised for the flooring problems. It said this week's precinct market was a special pre-booked event to coincide with Wakefield Mela and Yorkshire Day.

Lisa Dodd, Wakefield Council's service director for sport and culture, said: "We are working towards all specialist and one-off markets being located at the new open market site, which will draw even more people to the area to shop."

I think the new market is a white elephant, the building is dark and dinghy also unattractive, the space for traders is small, there are some empty places for traders in where the fish stall is one of the empty spaces is next to the veg stall in there, if the new space is taken up by someone, the veg man will have to reduce is stall to make space.
I have a mobility problem, there should be moor seating and the doors should have been electronic they are so heavy to open, the slabs you walk on out side is so uneven I have fallen twice next time I will take a photo and take the council to court.
Saturday 3rd august 2008 was one of our best days in Wakefield with the entertainment and farmers market. This should be done on a regular basis, and if you move the farmers market to the new market I will not be going to it,
