A NEW £11m swimming pool is planned for the site of the city's former Sun Lane Baths.
Wakefield Council has released this artist's impression of how the pool and fitness centre may look.

The city has been starved of a serious swimming venue since the controversial closure of Sun Lane in 2006 and problems with the pool at Lightwaves during 2008. Both were closed amid fears of public safety caused by structural problems.

This week the council announced it wants to know what the people of the city think about this latest design.

Coun Denise Jeffery, deputy leader and Wakefield Council's cabinet member for sport and regeneration, said: "Last year we promised people we would work towards building a fantastic new pool in the city and we are now moving forward in earnest.

"This is a major project and one we are determined to get right – these things don't happen overnight and a lot of work has been going on in the background. Now we can show people our initial thoughts and look forward to hearing people's responses as we move towards a planning application early next year."

The sporting complex could include an eight-lane 25-metre pool, a learner's pool, a fitness suite and health suite, spa bath, steam room and sauna. Features will include a moveable floor in both pools to provide flexibility in its uses. It could also accommodate 200 spectators and the plan includes a cafe.

Sun Lane baths were designed by Wakefield architect Percy Morris. They opened in 1937 and were demolished in January 2007.

The council begins a two-week consultation period on Monday, November 30.

To give your views, visit either Wakefield Town Hall or Lightwaves Leisure Centre during opening hours, or see www.wakefield. gov.uk/citypool from November 30. For more on sport and active lifestyles, contact the council on 08458 506506.

Hope all regular writers who have moaned about lack of swimming facilities respond on the consultation. And do not do what they normally do. Which is not respond, then when the scheme is at planning stage say they were not consulted ,do not like the building, is not big enough etc. I will be watching in the future and as i always do remind you of the facts not your own views on lack of consultation.

There are about a dozen fitness centres in Wakefield, do we really need any more ?

I wonder how this marvel of a structure with moving floors will fair on the back of this councils construction disasters such as the failed market hall and faulty lightwaves.

I suspect there's plenty more concrete in the pipeline or was it all used up on the gallery ?

The artists impression looks like it belongs at an airfield, housing an airship or giant plane, where's the character in that ?

Sun lane baths had sculpture by Eric Gill, art deco features and a touch of modernism, the new design could have been done with an "etch a sketch" !

11 million quid for a hole filled with water...

Like Joe said, now's the time to act.

At least you have commented and gave your views at the proper time. As you said we would all like to see recreated victorian type buildings but unfortunatly it would double the price so we have to put up with modern buildings. But lets not have another hepworth please.

As long as they don't contract the same muppets who built the Food market, it should be OK.

What I want to know is Sun Lane baths getting a second Hand pool installed, and like Philip said, we have small pool doted around Wakefield, we need a olympic pool not another pool that is half size that no one uses, kids want to dive of boards, and train for olypics and put Wakefield on the map..
We have had poor facilitys for years and sport in the uk is not getting the support from the goverment it need, Wakefield is a joke compared to other citys, if you want second best thats up to you but some of us want more for Wakefield...

Why multi platform all singing all dancing nonsense...?

Just give us what we need...

A swimming pool !

Good point on disabled access, well needed.

Lets not go over the top, after all, this council does have a history for messing these things up !

How about a good sized pool for the exercise and sports events, deep pool with diving boards for brave, fun heated pool area for the kids and most of all, not way too expensive that it costs a fortune to enter just to recover the build price.

All pools have disabled access. New build have to have disabled access by law. Vagas whats this about a second hand pool. Think you are talking about the manchester pool which is promised for the south east of the district.25 metre pool is same size as every other pool in the district 8 lanes will be the widest as other pools are six lanes. Also vagas what poor sports facilities, Thornes park stadium and track. Lightwaves state of the art gym. Various swimming pools around the district. School facilities second to non rugby and football fields around the district. Expert coaching in schools look at national schools finals in rugby league 6 teams from Cas high 1 from outwood and 1 from freeston contested 8 finals. I attend martial arts group at a school with 50 members ranging from 6 to 56 year olds. I ran 10 junior rugby league teams. There is another 10 teams in the district all with a similiar number. These are all possible working in partnership with the council and proffesional clubs such as Cas, fev, and wakey. Do not say we have no sport in the district vagas.Get off your backside and contribute to bringing sport to the kids instead of constant whinging vagas.

On disabled other pools run sessions specially for disabled and can accomadate them at other public sessions as well. Plus swimming is free for over 60,s and under 16,s and the rest can get aspire cards which gives you freedom to use all council facilities at a reduced cost including the new gyms.
