BOOZY yobs marring the city centre have been told: "your days are numbered" by a Wakefield police officer.
Insp Dave Peach, 42, made the comment yesterday when he revealed how officers are combating the threat of alcohol-related crime and disorder.

In the past three weeks police have issued 22 'directions to leave', an order which gives officers power to move on disorderly adults before trouble breaks out.

If the troublemakers return within the following 48 hours. they are committing a criminal offence which carries a maximum penalty of a £2,500 fine.

Police have also been working with shopkeepers, who fear customers are being intimidated by an abusive group of youths in the precinct.

But a strong police presence has meant no dispersal orders have been breached.

Insp Peach, of Wakefield central neighbourhood police team, said: "Wakefield is a safe and friendly place and people can come to Wakefield and go about their daily business without fear.

"The second message is to those few people who seek to engage in anti-social behaviour within Wakefield city centre – their days are numbered. We will drive them out of the city using legislation available to us."

He said anti-social behaviour had a massive impact on people's quality of life, but he hoped people would start challenging it and improve Wakefield for everyone.

Anyone with information about such problems should ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or click here.
