Rugby league star admits assault

A SUPER League rugby star pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he appeared in court today. (Friday July 18.)
Ben Cockayne, 24, admitted assaulting Kiel Thompson in Normanton centre on November 10.

Hull Kingston Rovers full back, Cockayne, of Shaw Close, Normanton, denied a charge of affray which was said to have taken place on the same day.

His co-accussed Steven Hayward, 19, of George Street, Alltofts, entered identical pleas at Leeds Crown Court.

The pleas were accepted by the prosecution.

Judge Stephen Ashurst adjourned sentencing on former Normanton Knights player Cockayne and on Hayward, who has played for Castleford Tigers reserves.

The judge granted both men bail men but told them all sentencing options would be considered.

They are expected to appear before the court at a later date.
